Karting News - 9th July 2006
2006 Covkartsport Senior Lights Championship - Rye House.
17 very keen drivers all competing in each race, big challenging circuit, changing weather conditions throughout the meeting but rubbish kart's. That just about sums up the covkartsport karting meeting at Rye House....only kidding.
The 1st race I was gridded 14th. I had a brilliant start especially through the 1st big corner and ended up 6th or 7th. I gain more places to eventually be challenging for 3rd, which is just when it went all very wrong. I was tapped by the driver behind me and one of the engines stopped. I managed to stop near a marshall who restarted the engine and I set off again, but another 100 meters or so the engine stopped again, so I struggled back into the pits where I was put in another kart but obviously it was to late and I finished last. As there were only 3 race for the senior light at this meeting, I was informed that "That's Racing" and nothing would be done about it. At other meetings where there have been 6 races in the senior lights, drivers who have not finish a race due to technical problems with kart's, have been allowed rerun in other races. This policy should be stopped because it penalises anyone who has problems at meeting where there are only 3 races but compensates people where they have problems where there are 6 races and this can have a significant effect on the championship points.
In my 2nd race I was now fired up and determined to make amends for what happened in the 1st race. I started 6th and again I had a good start which saw me move up to 4th. The driver in 3rd blocked and slowed me for a number of laps causing 5th and 6th placed drivers to catch up. Eventually he made a mistake and I got passed him, but I was to far behind to catch 2nd I ended the race in 3rd.

I left my best for last. I was still fired up from previous events and I was 7th on the grid. Another good start and change of tactics for the 1st corner(complements to my Dad), I finished the 1st lap in 3rd. I passed the driver in 2nd on the next lap by out braking him on one of the tight twisty sections and set off after the 1st place driver. For 2 laps he resisted, but I teased him that I was passing on one side, he went to cover and I passed him on the other side (Now "That's racing!"). I gained myself a good lead in the next few laps and finished the race an easy 1st.
With all the initial problems of the day, I was surprised that I actually finished 4th on the day, which means I'm now 4th in the Senior Lights and 13th= in the overall Covkartsport championship. The next Covkartsport karting meeting is next September back at GYG. Details of this result and previous Race Results for 2006.
Cheers.
