Karting News - 9th April 2006
2006 Covkartsport Senior Lights Championship - Red Lodge.

This was my 1st race in the Senior Lights category of the Covkartsport Championship, and I have to say the racing is at a much more intense level than it ever was in the juniors(not necessarily in a good way). There are 22 drivers in this category, and vast majority are either long term Covkartsport drivers, those who have graduated from juniors or those who have driven in other karting events.

I was in kart 1, 1st on the grid, in the my 1st race in the Senior Light category (Note: I was in kart 1, 1st on the grid, in the my 1st race in the Junior category last year...spooky!!!) and I had a good start for once. I led up to the 4th lap but I went wide into the approach to the second corner and lost the lead. For the remaining 8 laps, I was bumped and bashed by the karts behind and took the chequered flag in 2nd place.

In my 2nd race, I was gridded 6th on the outside of the track (not the place to be). This time I had a rubbish start, as I couldn't get my kart onto the inside line and I had to go around the 2nd left corner on the outside. This meant I lost a few places, but the drivers who passed me were slow which allowed the front 3 drivers to get away. I gradually clawed my way back up through the field to 5th, which is where I finished the race.

My last race saw me at the back of the grid in 11th and I was so far back my Dad thought I'd started in the car park. I had nothing to loose so I just went for it and after the 1st lap I was up to 9th. I then got stuck behind someone who knew the line and never deviated from it, but eventually he made a mistake and I got through. I passed the next driver quite easily, and I now had to focus on 5th and 6th who were knocking each other all over the track (non contact sport...you wouldn't know it watching these 2). Eventually they both went wide on a left hander, still bumping each other, which left a gap on the inside line and I passed both of them (my best move of the day). I managed to catch up the 4th placed driver, but I ran out of laps and ended the race in 5th.

I finished the day in joint 4th on points (5th if you include fastest laps), which means at the moment I'm joint 4th in the Senior Lights Championship. The next race meeting is on the 21st May, at Sutton Elms. Details of this result and previous Race Results for 2006.

Cheers.
