2005 Covkartsport Junior Championship - Glan-y-gors.
GYG, Covkartsport Junior Championship Race, 10th July 2005 - If only
It was a really hot day at GYG or Glan-y-gors to give it its real name. Its a good circuit with some very technical corners and it has a wide track which is good for passing. I was 4th on the grid in my 1st race and I had a good start. The kart in front of me didn't and I had to go around him, so by the end of the first lap I was up to 3rd. On the 4th lap, on the entry into the Spoon, my kart was hit on the right rear wheel by some idiot, sending me into a spin. Everyone then passed me leaving me last and I then spent the rest of the race clawing back a couple of place to finish 7th.
I was 5th on the grid in my 2nd race and looking to recover from the bad events of the 1st race. I had a brilliant start and moved into 1st by the time I got to the spoon. I then consolidated my lead during the race and never looked back only to see the remainder of the field entering the pits straight at Paddock bend when I took the chequered flag.
I still had a lot to prove during the 3rd race, and I was 7th on the grid. The main Championship contenders were in this race Alex Johnson-Bret, Sparky Whitelegge, Andrew Juckes, Jamie Lambert and I'd heard a few comments in the pits relating to who was going to win. This made me even more determined to prove I was still a contender. I had another good start and again moved into 1st by the time I got to the spoon. I then just went away from the field with comparative ease mainly because the 2nd placed driver who couldn't handle the uphill sections was defending like mad and holding everyone up. I even started to lap people towards the end and finished the race even further ahead than I had in the 2nd race. This left me 4th on the day based on overall points score, not bad considering what happened in the 1st race
Congratulations to Matthew Holmes for winning on his debut, another Daytona Manchester Driver. I'm now 3rd equal, with 234 points (after dropping my lowest score), in the Junior Championship and 7th equal in the overall Covkartsport Championship. The next Covkartsport race meeting is after the Summer break, back at Sutton Elms, on the 18th September 2005. My next race may be at Three Sisters on the 18h July 2005. Bye for now..
