Sutton Elms(Clockwise), Covkartsport Junior Championship Race, 17th April 2005 - A good start!

My first races in the Covkartsport Junior Championship were at the Sutton Elms circuit near Leicester. The meeting consisted of 3 races (each of 8 laps) of this tight dry circuit, with all points counting to the Junior winner for the day and the overall 2005 Junior Championship. There were 21 driver competing and we were split into 3 groups of 7.

My 1st race was in race 1, kart 1 and grid position 1. There were only 3 laps of practice and the 1st race was held straight after without getting out of the kart. This put me at a disadvantage as I had never been to this circuit before and most of the other driver had either raced there last year or had been to the practice sessions held last February. I had a good start and held the lead for a few laps but I made a mistake at the hairpin and let someone pass. I managed to do the same again on the next lap with the same result. I then had someone to follow, which gave me the chance to learn the circuit and I held onto 3rd until the end of the race.

For the 2nd race, I was 4th on the grid and a lot wiser as to how the circuit should be driven. I had a brilliant start and passed all 3 drivers in front of me by the 1st corner. I held off a strong challenge for the lead by Sparky Whitelegge during the rest of the race and crossed the finish line in 1st place.

The third race had me in 7th on the grid in one of the worst karts on the circuit. My Dad had noticed that kart 7 was good on the straights but rubbish in the corners. So my tactic was to get a good start and then defend the position I had. This I did and I finished 5th.

The points I scored plus my fastest lap time, put me 6th on the day and 6th in the overall Junior Championship. I have had my first win in this championship so not a bad start and I'm now looking forward to the next races at Red Lodge near Newmarket on the 8th May 2005.
